Wildlife Wednesday: Hiding in the Grasses of Nepal

Rhino

After spending weeks in the mountains, a side trip to south-central Nepal to visit Chitwan National Park was a complete 180. Sticky heat and monsoon rains for starters, but also it was chance to spot wildlife beyond yaks or dogs.

These pictures were taken on an afternoon jeep safari. The grasses were so tall from the rains that it seemed unlikely we’d see anything beyond deer, boar or a stray peacock. But then on our way back, this big gal caught our eye. Hiding amongst the grasses, this one-horned rhinoceros let us jockey for a decent look and even came slightly closer before turning 120 degrees and running off, quickly disappearing amongst the sea of green.
