Monday Madness: Peppermint Stick Insect

This is Megacrania batesii, aka the peppermint stick insect!
Peppermint Stick

Found only in Queensland, Australia and a few Pacific Ocean islands, these peppermint stick insects live on these screwpine leaves.  The peppermint part of their name comes from their ability to secrete a milky, peppermint smelling substance when bothered.  I found these rascals on a coastal trek along Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia.

I’m sure it’s possible to find them in the Thai food markets, but I’ll pass! Someone tried convincing me that they’re not meat and therefore vegetarian friendly. Still a big fat NO.
